Community work in Bangalore, India
Project Overview
Overview
Have you got people skills?
You could put your talents to great use by assisting on one of a number of community projects around the colorful city of Bangalore; working in schools that help underprivileged, severely handicapped and deaf children. You’ll soak up the sun as well as world-famous sights including the magnificent Vidhana Soudha and budding Cubbon Park, while using your talents to support the project through befriending, counselling, education and healthcare assistance.
Trip Highlights:
Itinerary & Details
What does this community project do?
You could get involved with one of a variety of community development projects available in Bangalore, which include:
- Working with girls and women with disabilities in a residential home.
- Working in a school for deaf and hearing-impaired children.
- Providing schooling to children from local orphanages/the slums.
- Teaching English and computing knowledge to young children from the slums.
The majority of these projects are based in either schools, orphanages or drop in/day care centres, which local children attend on a daily basis.
Why does this project need volunteers?
Disabled children and orphans in India are deprived of many opportunities to ensure their successful development. The aims of these projects are to provide education and social skills to disadvantaged/underprivileged children and keep them away from life in the slums. You can make a difference in the lives of these children by helping with after school programs, computer training for teenagers and street children, and other valuable programs. The orphanage does request that volunteers stay for a minimum of two months.
Why Bangalore?
Bangalore used to be known not very long ago as a sleepy quiet peaceful garden city with a salubrious climate all through the year – ideal to retire in. These very advantages have also led to its growth and development into a major mega metropolis – a bustling crowded capital( of the state of Karnataka) of about 8 million which is a major centre of research and development and a reputation as the ‘silicon valley’ of India. It is a very cosmopolitan centre embracing people and cultures from all over the world, throbbing with life and vibrancy, a place that offers residents and visitors a wide choice of activities, with theatres, cultural centres, art galleries, parks, and restaurants catering to any kind of taste at very reasonable prices. Bangalore is centrally located in the southern peninsula and within easy reach of Goa, Kerala, Pondicherry, Chennai, Mysore, the Nilgiri mountains and world famous heritage sites like Hampi – each of which can be visited over different week ends.
However, like every great urban centre, Bangalore also has its share of problems of growth and rapid increase in population. The city is in a state of change as it struggles to improve infrastructure, with a new international airport, and learn how to cope with problems of urban poverty. This is where opportunities abound for those who are more fortunate and inclined to help and make a difference – to volunteer to spend time with organisations and schools for the poor and disabled and thereby mix the pleasures of experiencing life in a beautiful part of India with the satisfaction of having spent a short part of their lives productively in helping the cause of the less fortunate.
Your role as a volunteer
Your main role is to provide basic daily care for the orphans/disabled children or children from the slums. You are also encouraged to actively participate in programs such as health education, games, drawing, and arts and crafts. If you have plenty of energy, you may also choose to get involved in sports and create teaching materials to aid the children's learning. You may be working in small groups or on a one-to-one basis and will be expected to contribute in any way possible, so it is advised to come prepared with bags of ideas, activities and fun games for the children!
The skills you need
Most of the projects seek committed individuals to help strengthen their projects and programs, so a willingness to learn is essential. Caring projects such as this are tough, but rewarding, so if you’re resilient and independent you’ll be more suitable for this type of work. You should also be emotionally mature and able to cope with distressing situations that could occur. A background in care work is not necessary, but some knowledge of working with mental or physical disabled people would be useful. A genuine love for children, flexibility, self-motivation and openness to a new culture are also highly valued at these projects.
Accommodation included
You will be living in a nearby local guesthouse, run by an Indian family, or a comfortable shared apartment giving you the perfect chance to live alongside the local culture and make friends with other volunteers.
Project resources and advice
Many of the projects are funded by the Government or supported by local NGOs, but have very few resources, so it would be greatly appreciated if you could bring additional equipment from home, such as story books, pens, crayons, cassettes and arts and crafts material.
Local facilities
The projects are based in the suburbs of Bangalore about 15-30 minutes outside the city centre. You will be able to get local transport to your project each day from your accommodation.
Please note; The Festival of Diwali (Festival of Lights) takes place every year either at the end of October or beginning of November where the projects will be closed for a week for the festivities.
Projects will also be affected for a week over the Christmas period December 25, please be aware of these dates when making your booking.
Food included
All your meals will be provided each day, in the form of breakfast, lunch and dinner, which will be traditional vegetarian-friendly Indian cuisine.

What were the highlights of your trip?
Meeting people (locals, my students, my fellow volunteers) and being a part of their lives. Experiencing how vastly different India culture and daily life is from my own. Noting the similarities of our cultures. How wonderful my fellow volunteers were. How meaningful it was to spend time with children at the school and how welcoming they were to me.

same as above: Meeting people (locals, my students, my fellow volunteers) and being a part of their lives. Experiencing how vastly different India culture and daily life is from my own. Noting the similarities of our cultures. How wonderful my fellow volunteers were. How meaningful it was to spend time with children at the school and how welcoming they were to me.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
Have an open mind. Learn as much as you can about the country and culture before your travels, experience as much of the country and culture during your travels. Drink plenty of clean water.
Give Us Up To 10 Words That Sum Up Your Experience: For example - "A life changing experience!"
More exciting and fulfilling than your typical vacation.
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
I had a pretty good experience. There were many challenges, but I count them as part of experience and wouldn't want to change any of it. Getting around - transportation in general, was the only part of my travels that I found myself dreading. I don't know how i-to-i could change this, short of arranging all of the in-country transportation (which would have taken away from the overall experience). The other volunteers really helped me with alot of the challenges I face. Had I not had them as a resource, I imagine my trip would have been very different. So I think making sure the volunteers have time and space to spend with eachother is key.

Lucy Haines gives this project 10/10

Great to experience the projects and to therefore be a real part of the local community. I would like to particulalry commend your Bangalore in country team. Both Asha and Meena were fantastic and I would say changed what could have been a good experience to a fantastic experience through their orientation and continued support for all the volunteers.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
Yes - the project.

Louise Brand gives this project 10/10
Here is what Louise had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
The Indian culture is amazing it is such a contrast to the culture in the UK, I really loved discovering new things every day. The weekend trips were a brilliant idea it is nice to get out of the city to see more of India whilst at the same time getting to know the placement city as well. Indian food is to dye for and the house that I lived in served the best food I had in the whole of India.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
In my project I worked with deaf children from a less privileged background and I specifically worked with one child in the hope to get him to the stage of being mainstream enough to work with the other children. The day that affected me most was when my teacher told me that he didn't need my help anymore, although I was sad because I wouldn't be teaching him anymore I was so unbelievable proud of how far he had come in such a short period of time. Teaching deaf children is unbelievably rewarding.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
1) You must always be prepared for the unexpected and because of this you really need to be flexible. 2) Try as many new dishes as possible, take recomendations from locals and don't just try the ones you recognise from home 3) Go vegetarian, even though more often than not your food will be prepared well and you will not have a problem eating meat you should go vegetarian. India has such a wealth of vegetarian dishes that you are spoilt for choice everywhere you go.

Volunteering is the only way to travel!
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
No, we were looked after very well and my placement was amazing I wish I had stayed longer than 4 weeks.

James Sharp gives this project 10/10
Here is what James had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
Bangalore is an amazing city, so vibrant, busy and modern. I loved working with RAVE magazine from my first day. It felt professional, and I was instantly accepted by the team. The best thing was the freedom given by the editing staff who offered their support but were never overbearing. Asha, our co-ordinator, and her husband Baby also deserve a mention, as does Meena. They were fantastic from day 1. We felt instantly welcome when we arrived and knew we could rely on them to keep us safe during our stay should we ever get into trouble.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
Everything about India has opened my eyes to how lucky we are in England. Working for the magazine, I didn't experience first hand the poverty that affects so many people in Bangalore, but it did give me the opportunity to speak to people who lived here and gain an understanding of how life is in the city. I wanted to go into journalism before I took on the course, but I thought I would test myself first by doing the placement. I now feel as though I can go home and throw myself into a career with confidence.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
1. Pack light - you might think you're coming to a place where commodities are hard to find, but Bangalore can cater for almost everything if you know where to find it. Things like toiletries, medication and even clothes are much cheaper out here. In fact, the only thing I couldn't find was Marmite (but I did get some from Goa). 2. Don't be shy - everyone who comes here is in the same position as you, and whilst it may seem daunting at first, this is a good thing. It's the ultimate ice-breaker. You're here for, if not the same reasons, similar ones, so you have something in common right there. The whole experience will be better if you throw yourself into it and make as many friends as possible. 3. Get out of the city - Bangalore is amazing, there's no doubt about it. But use your weekends to travel to places like Pondicherry, Goa, Mysore and Hampi. You'll appreciate a change of scenery, some clean air and overall some peace and quiet!
Give Us Up To 10 Words That Sum Up Your Experience: For example - "A life changing experience!"
The best way to make friends and make a difference.
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
Personally, this experience has been the best of my life so far. The only thing that could have made it better is if I had another month to go!

Jane Wilson gives this project 10/10
Here is what Jane had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
I couldn't wait to tell them about the children I have been working with and all their opinions/thoughts on various topics we discussed. Their views of the world, and the differences in cultures. At first things like the number of cows in the road, and what appeared mad traffic and road rules, although that appears the norm now. The friends I have met on the trip are beyond anything I expected and i hope to stay in touch with them for years to come. The food has been amazing and I have not been ill once. It has been none stop busy but I wouldnt change it for the world. Being in the newspaper was a particular highlight!

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
Being in India has changed the way i look at the world in many ways. To appreciate different cultures, (although i did before) in a new way. The circumstances in which the children live have affected me and made me think about my own life in a new way and want to help them further. It makes you appreciate things we have at home in terms of cleanliness, be grateful for things we previously took for granted. The overt presence of religion has also affected me in a positive way and made me look more into myself and religion.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
1) don't take malaria before eating. it will end in a hospital trip. 2) don't leave your window open on a sleeper bus, someone will try grope you/steal your things. 3) don't leave your camera out even if you are at a private party even with your friends, the DJ will steal it.

I'm left with a new found respect for life
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
The project I did meant I was only teaching tuesday thursday friday, another time I would like to make better use of my time on the days i had free, either have a bigger inpact on the children I was working with on those days, or having the oportunity to help out in other projects and experience other things not only to have an inpact on other childrens lives and circumstances but to improve my own experience.

Jenna Horsfield gives this project 10/10
Here is what Jenna had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
In general, the highlight of this trip will be the time I have spent with the children at Ashraya. I have enjoyed all aspects of my time there from playing with the toddlers to doing individual reading with the older children. I was really pleased to have helped one toddler walk by herself by spending time with her individually, building up her confidence. When she first walked by herself, I was so proud of her. The children are so sweet at Ashraya and just want love and attention.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
The project has changed me because I had never seriously considered adoption previously, but now after seeing the children at Ashraya, it has made me determined to adopt when I am older. It has also made me seriously consider a career, which is fulfilling and beneficial for others, not purely for myself.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
. expect the unexpected! . listen to the advice of the in-country coordinators and the guest-house owners . bring books or some form of entertainment for the evening

An enjoyable and worthwhile experience that I will never forget!
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
I was ill for a couple of days, which did mean I could not enjoy Hampi as much as I would have liked. Apart from that, I have no complaints.

Liz Mayo gives this project 10/10
Here is what Liz had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
I couldn't wait to tell my friends about all the wonderful children and women at the concerns school which I was volunteering at.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
It changed the way I looked at education. I took my educational options for granted and didn't realise how many people wish to be educated but do not have the chance. This experience made me reflect alot on the world, especially India, and how many people are born into less privelleged backgrounds and how they have the strength to push towards a better life, and it made me realise we can help to do that too.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
1. keep an open mind! Be friendly, let everything in with open arms, even when you are feeling a bit vulnerable and that you have experienced a huge culture shock, keep going! 2. Don't plan too much as things can sometimes change! A great thing to do is to volunteer but have some free time afterwards as you will meet alot of other people and may decide to go travelling together!. 3. Don't pack too much, you won't need half the stuff you think you will need!

Hannah Morgan gives this project 10/10
Here is what Hannah had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
I had a really great time on my trip, and especially loved working at Ashraya Children's Home. The children themselves have made my experience very memorable with their boundless energy and enthusiasm. Focussing on a 3 yr old girl who is blind has been challenging but very rewarding. I have watched the changes in her as she becomes more independent and I can see that she will continue to progress. Also helping a young 2yr old to walk, and being there for his first, wobbly, steps was a priviledge. Staying at the guest house and working at the project has also allowed me to learn and become involved in the Indian culture much more than if I were travelling alone. Travelling at the weekend has been brilliant and I have seen some amazing places and had great fun. I've also made some really good friends.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
Before I started my placement I had assumed I would be saddened by my experiences at Ashraya, however I did not find this at all. Although there are many sad situations and backgrounds that the children have come from, it is such a nice, caring place that I now consider these children relatively lucky and found my time with them very happy. This trip has made me realise how much I enjoy working with children, and I am considering altering my career path accordingly. I am also very keen to partake in volunteer work, such as this, in the future.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

An amazing adventure that has touched my heart.
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
Nothing that could be helped! A chest infection set me back in the first week, and I have had big problems with mosquitoes. Other than that I would do it all again exactly the same!

Isadora Venturelli gives this project 10/10
Here is what Isadora had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
The environment, surroundings and the experience of working with children from overprivileged neighborhoods.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
Yes, working with the underprivelivged children from the slums made me realize - acutely - just how overprivileged many of us are and that there are people in the world that survive and thrive on much less.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
1) Be open to new experiences. You will be faced with unfamiliar circumstances. 2) Keep your wits about you, be careful. 3) Have access to more money than you initailly thought you'd need - just in case.

sophie brooks gives this project 10/10
Here is what sophie had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
I loved learning sign language and being able to see how real indian children lived rather than having a western holiday tour of an area. I loved feeling like part of the community and living somewhere so different from western life. I really enjoyed meeting the children and developing a familiarity so they recognised me as a helper. The teachers were lovely and flexible with our needs as well as the childrens.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
Working in a deaf school made me see deaf children in a different manner, I dont feel sorry for them or see it as a neagtive like I did before. Now I see it as an alternative way of communicating and see the 'disability' as a new way of seeing the world. Not speaking and talking to the children in words opened up a whole new level of communicaton.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
Girls - take Tampons they dont have any in India. Go out with the other volunteers and involve yourself in the group as you see and experience more. Be prepared to be tired or have a down day where you dont feel as enthusiastic. It is hard work and everyday isnt fun and saintly. Some days you do miss people and feel tired or low but its natural. you will feel happy much more than feeling low. Over all 99% of the time is happy and fun - just remember youre human.

Joseph Casey gives this project 10/10
Here is what Joseph had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
The people and culture of the country I visited. The people I met, the volunteer project I was involved with and the places I visited.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
The people I met; in particular their friendliness, hospitality and openess.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
1) Be tolerant and open-minded of the culture you are visiting. Try to 'do as the Romans do' rather than try and create a 'little Britain' or a 'little America'. The culture you are visiting will be very different from the one you are used to; if you are mindful of this then you will have a more enjoyable time and the locals will enjoy having you more!!! 2) Carry a small first-aid kit, some toilet paper and some anti-bacterial hand gel with you everywhere! 3) Above all have fun and don't worry; the more open-minded and forward thinking you are the better the experience you will have.

Here is what Maresa had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
The Children at the concern foundation made my trip truly worthwhle. Engaging with the locals and leading their way of life was an enlightening experience and i will take home some very precious memories. At the weekends we visited Hampi and climbed monkey temple and also Fort Cochin which was beautiful, we took a trip in a rice boat and saw the backwaters of Kerela. In Bangalore, my i to i companions took bollywood dancing lessons and cooking lessons. I really cant pinpoint any one experience. It was just truly and amazing and wonderful trip which i will never forget!

Taylor Flores gives this project 10/10
Here is what Taylor had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
Getting the chance to work at the deaf and hearing impaired school. Just the atmosphere and life in bangalore is so different then that of home, it's amazing to see and live in it. You really do feel like you are a temporary local rather then tourist or even traveller. When we were first coming back from the airport you have cars driving on the sidewalks, in on coming traffic and we even had 3 camels crossing the main freeway! In all the crazyness somehow things still worked like clockwork and it was amazing to see.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
I had never imagined I would be able to communicate the way I did with the deaf children. They taught me just as much, if not more, then I was able to teach them! I had seen poverty before and getting the chance to live in India and hear the lifestories of some of the children really opened my eyes. The things we think of as a necessity to life, they have never seen or experienced before. As sad as I thought I would be about that, I realized it's just the way the life is. The children are SO welcoming and loving, they want to do everything you do and play all the time.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
Take the amount of time you plan on spending in India and multiply that by at least two! India is so spread out and it takes a very long time to travel so you need plenty of time to see and do everything you want to. Don't overpack for weekend trips. You will most likely be moving around a lot with ALL your luggage because check out will be very early so make sure you can carry all your bags comfortably where ever you go. On the busses you will take for weekend trips, DO NOT get the very last seats. There are about 5 of them in the back but the whiplash is very intenese. Any other seat is good but make sure to not get the very back row!
Give Us Up To 10 Words That Sum Up Your Experience: For example - "A life changing experience!"
An experience that I wouldn't trade for anything!
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
Having more time to experience all that India holds for me.

Trishul Patel gives this project 10/10
Here is what Trishul had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
The biggest highlight of all was the experience I had with the children. It was a truly eye-opening experience! Mature yet childlike, they are fantastic. They are very energetic and happy, despite their backgrounds. Truly inspiring. The people I met also were a huge highlight as I didn't expect to meet people who i'd make such good friends with in the short space of time. Lastly, but not least, all the sightseeing we did: the trips on the weekend and visiting bangalore, a brilliant, magnificent experience allround!

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
All I can say is that I will never feel sad again. If I do, a single thought of the happy, energetic children with their under-priveledged backgrounds will be all I need to be happy again!

Stephanie Jones gives this project 10/10
Here is what Stephanie had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
The kids that I was working with are amazing. Working at the SKID project I was terrified about going into a school not knowing any sign language and trying to figure out how to communicate with the kids. The teachers and students alike were very helpful and easy to work with, and taught me more then I could have taught them!

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
Again I would say the kids, and also the teachers at the school. The kids are so great, and appreciative of anything you can give. The teachers are incredibly resourceful, they really take pride in their classes and use every opportunity to teach the kids something new. Also they have an increible amount of patience, something we could all use a little bit more of!

Here is what Eli had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
1. The orphanage that I worked at was amazing. The children were so fun, cute, and happy. The staff was really friendly, as were most everyone I encountered in India. 2. The weekends are when you must go travel and explore your country/city. These provided me with great insights on the culture that I was immersed into, and provided me with one-of-a-kind experiences. 3. I took sitar lessons and purchased a state-of-the-art sitar to take home. I took bollywood dancing classes, saw some bollywood films, and took cooking classes.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
I learned that although different cultures have different mindsets, ways of life, and attitudes than our own, we are all the same deep inside. We all are affected by the same things, and we all have the same desires.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
1. At every chance you get, make the most of your trip. Do things that are only possible in your country, and do as much as you can to absorb the culture. Stay busy. 2. Research your country extensively before you come. Learn the mindsets, the art, the music, the foods, the geography, the religions, the cultural differences, and more because you will appreciate everything so much more and will be better off for it. 3. Use the weekends to travel, and organize yourself and where you want to go/ what you want to do.

Lucy Austin gives this project 9/10
Here is what Lucy had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
Teaching the children was brilliant, I proved to myself that I could do it even though I had not had any experience in teaching. I was amazed at the friendliness of the people, they were very accepting and the teachers and children were so grateful for our help.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
When the teachers told me about the lives of the children that I was teaching, it brought home to me the reality of how some people live and the lives that they leave. Despite this they seemed bright and cheerful when they were around me, so it will make me think twice when I am complaining about menial things at home
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
Make sure that you keep a track of all your belongings, bring long tops that cover your midriff if you are wearing low cut trousers and when you are on your placement, make the most of it and take part in every activity possible to get the best experience and to build good relationships with those you are helping.
Give Us Up To 10 Words That Sum Up Your Experience: For example - "A life changing experience!"
Amazing, eye opening, rewarding and chance to meet new friends
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
The only thing that would have made the experience more perfect would be that i was teaching a few times a week but on the other days, I was not really doing anything, just sitting at the back of the class and helping when I could. Maybe on these days it would be possible to take small groups of the children for english practice or help out at other projects, as I was involved with teaching older children and it would be nice to have some experience with the younger ones as well.

Preema Chande gives this project 9/10
Here is what Preema had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
I had an amazing experience playing cricket with the street children every day and perfected my skills! Every other day I would also bathe the children and take in shampoo and soap which they would love and would beg me to do every day. I was also able to perfect my hindi speaking skills that i was very proud about too.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?

Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
From the time that i booked the project i didnt receive the welcome pack instantly and the information wasnt updated on my i-to i account. I understand that i booked it a few weeks beforehand but it would have been more helpful if i could have had that information earlier. It would also have helped to have seen accomodation pictures of the villa i was staying at to put my mind at rest!

Kyle Sethi gives this project 9/10
Here is what Kyle had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
There are several highlights to pick from but I think mainly the project itself and the chance to work with the deaf children has been particularly rewarding and enjoyable and I hope that my help has made some sort of beneficial difference. The experience as a whole would not have been the same without the people I've met and stayed with and that certainly has been a highlight.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
Definately. I think my outlook regarding children perhaps less fortunate than ourselves has changed and I've learned to appreciate the actual help and work that goes into teaching these children who will find it tough in the outside world. Personally, I've learnt about my own ability in independence and I've become more reflective at times where I've had the chance to realise there is a different world to the relatively sheltered one I have experienced so far.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
I would say that it is crucial to throw yourself into the project in that you should get involved in every way possible to fully enjoy it. Also, travelling around when you get the opportunity; there is some much of India to see and a lot to do. Finally, embrace the culture. It is very different and initially difficult to adjust to but worthwhile in the end.

Joanna Corner gives this project 9/10
Here is what Joanna had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
The young children greeting me with 'Morning Aunty' every morning in their sweet, enthusiastic chants! Summer camp: Marching through the streets of the slum areas with the children and their banners of what they had learnt over the week, chanting 'Eat more fruits and vegetables', 'TB is curable' etc for all their fellow villagers to see. The welcome meal and leaving drinks with Asha, Mina and Babi. I have found the in-country team exceptionally friendly, approachable and caring. Weekends away exploring enchanting India, and looking forward to my last month exploring some more.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
Speaking to Chitra, the director of Concerns, and working on the annual report with her gave me a unique insight into Indian life and some of the devastating realities of this country. However, her strength and determination, mirrored in so many of the team, was inspiring and hopeful. I already knew how lucky I was, to have the upbringing, education and privileges that I have had. The experience has made me want to continue my support to the organisation, to ensure that more, and eventually all of the children of Bangalore, and hopefully the rest of India, can be given basic health and education, and in the future, all of the opportunities I have had.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
If you go to book a train at a travel agent and they say it is full, it is not. Only 50% of the tickets can be purchased in advance. The other 50% are available from the train station you will depart from so make the effort to go there to book instead of having to take a bus or missing your trip completely. Expect the unexpected. Try not to have any pre-conceptions or expectations about the country you are visiting and the project you are doing. Go with the flow and you will get more out of the experience! If in India - be aware of being ripped off, especailly by auto-rickshaw drivers. Agree a price - usually under half of what the auto-driver 1st asks. Or if you know the way, ask for metre. Be aware that they are very clever and can sense how well you know the city. They will drive you around for ages to raise the fare if they think they can! Saying that, I have found several very nice, honest and memorable rickshaw men in Bangalore but it doesn't hurt to be aware!
Give Us Up To 10 Words That Sum Up Your Experience: For example - "A life changing experience!"
Privileged to witness such inspiring people working towards a better future.
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
I was supposed to work for Rave mag and was gutted to hear they had shut down. Obviously this was not anyones fault but it was the trip I set out to do. However, when I didnt like Midday paper Asha was very understanding and quick to get me into a more suitable placement which I loved! I was a bit wary coming into India and the man that picked me up could have been friendlier - but maybe he didnt speak English. I thought I had bedbugs and was covered in tiny bites but when I told Mrs Katary she denied very forcefully and got angry about my 'accusation'. She could have handled this better as I was the one in pain yet she was the one who was angry. I could not fault Asha and Mina, they were so hospitible and made my trip what it was - amazing!

I was affected in the sense that it made me realise how worthwhile my volunteering could be even in a short space of time - however also made me realise how much more can be done and that I personally want to accomplish. Seeing only a couple of parts of India also has made me want to travel a lot more.

The volunteer work in general. I volunteered for 1 month in SKID institution for the death in Bangalore and it was one of the best experiences ever. I also loved the people in Bangalore in general. Everyone was very friendly!

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
Everyday life in general in India is so different from back home in Ireland so it was a big cultural shock but it has definately made me appreciate the things I have back home more. Also it has been the first time that I have ever been in contact with deaf children and I have found it very fulfilling.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
Make the most out of your trip that you possibly can because it flies in so quickly. Enjoy everyday of it! Inmy opinion if you are planning on coming to volunteer soley, then 1 month is a sufficient amount of time to settle in and enjoy your placement. However if you are looking to travel around India for a bit too then I would recommend at least 6 weeks so that you getthe most out of it that you can.

Megan Blattspieler gives this project 8/10
Here is what Megan had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
First the country itself was an experience on its own, completely different from anything I'd ever known. Second, the work I did was something I never thought I'd enjoy, but after the first day I was loving it.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
The whole experience of the project was something that is not like me to do, which was the initial change for me. More than that was dealing with people who I could not always verbally communicate with, yet were so kind and open with me. The young women I taught were excited to hear me talk and I was excited to have them understand what I was saying. I've never taught anyone anything like that, it made my time seem worth it while I was there. And I loved the kids, I never knew I liked kids so much!
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
Learn some of the language-you can get around fine with English but they love it when you speak their language. Get involved and don't sit back at all during your placement, everyone benefits from your involvement. Plan to travel on the weekends-it's an incredibly diverse country.

AMAZING
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
I was a little bit dissapointed in the amount of work that we were given at Concerns. Some of the other volunteers at different placements were working full days, where we usually had nothing to do after the kids left, midday. The time I spent at Concerns at the preschool and with the women was worthwhile, but the afternoons were less than productive. I wish that I could have done more with my time there.

Sarah Gallaway gives this project 8/10
Here is what Sarah had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
I really enjoyed observing the difference in the culture I found in India. The roads, people, markets etc. all made for a great experience. I really enjoyed the company of all the people I met including people working for i-to-i such as Asha and Shirley and found it really worthwhile.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
As I worked for Blessing Streams, which provides education for children who are from the slums, I was quite affected by the difference in what children are offered in places like the UK and the States in terms of education and the reality in different areas such as what I found here.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
I think a higher awareness of the difference in prices would be helpful to know as I think I originally came with too much money to feel safe with on me! An encouragement towards travelling at the weekends and making sure that you book it early to ensure that you get to go on the trips that you want to. And, prior to coming to India I found that many people warned me of health issues mainly regarding food and water and had some horror stories told to me! However, the food was part of the experience, and though common sense and awareness needs to be present, I would encourage people to not be too paranoid!
Give Us Up To 10 Words That Sum Up Your Experience: For example - "A life changing experience!"
An eye-opener!
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
I think may have been a bit more helpful is more explanation of trips that are more easily available to volunteers in terms of distance from Bangalore. Also, as I signed up for the community work project, I was unaware what kind of work I was to be doing, and though it was helpful to know that I would be working at a school prior to travelling, a more detailed explanation may be helpful, especially if volunteers are planning to bring supplies with them to ensure it's for the correct age group, activities etc.

Elizabeth Hawkins gives this project 8/10
Here is what Elizabeth had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
I loved most of the trip, all of it was a highlight... I enjoyed working with the children... I loved meeting all the other volunteers, workers at the orphanage, Asha, Meena and Mrs Katary... I looked forward to travelling at weekends and enjoyed many new experiences.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
I worked at ashraya orphanage for 6 weeks and after being with the children for that length of time I realised that I may one day adopt, a possibility I had never really considered before. The children there were so easily loving and looked forward to having a family that I wanted to take most of them home with me then and there!
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
Make the most of every second of the trip. Say yes to everything new - i.e. we went to bollywood dance classes. Travel around as much as you can.

A truely rewarding experience!
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
The only thing I could say that would have made the experience better would be to stay longer. I was on the project for 2 weeks and it passed far too quickly.

gemma knight gives this project 8/10

What were the highlights of your trip?
learning about a whole different culture! meeting the most friendly people. and having the opportunity of making a difference to people in india.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
i think the difference between the cultures showed me how much we take material objects for granted and how we take the NHS for granted and moan when there is a waiting list!
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
the handbook is a lil out dated so i would not take things for the project. next time i would see what they needed when i got there and buy it then.have an open mind, enbrace the differences in the culture.see as many of the sights as you can whilst there. which takes a lot of planning.
Give Us Up To 10 Words That Sum Up Your Experience: For example - "A life changing experience!"

Jessica Gaskell gives this project 8/10
Here is what Jessica had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
The school - the teachers and the children were fantastic. I do not think that we could have wished for a better project. The children are so happy and welcoming, the teachers have been a constant source of support and laughter. I cannot wait to tell my friends and family about how much I respected the work done there and how touched I was by the childrens enthusiam to learn.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
I think this project has really made me realise how lucky I am with my life. To have supportive and caring family and friends, and to have choices about my future. This experience has made me feel that there is so much more I can give to those who aren't so priveledged. At home I already took part in volunteer projects whilst I was at university but now I will encourage all my friends to do the same.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

More up to date advice about travelling, we were often given advice that was not current. We managed okay and had lots of fun on our travels even if they did go wrong but often we thought it would have been useful to have more current advice about trips etc

Seanna Doonan gives this project 8/10
Here is what Seanna had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
The second placment i went to was certainly much more enjoyable for me. Having worked with children in the uk for some time i didn't feel i was achieving anything more in India than i was at home. However after speaking with my in country coordinator i expressed an interest in Art which is one of my big passions. The coordinator spoke to the school and i began creating Art work for the class rooms with the instruction from the class teacher. This was fantastic for me as i was combining the two things i love, working with children and Art. It also became apparent that something such as Art that comes so easily for me was massivly appreciated by the staff and children which made me feel great. I can also leave a part of me in the school and hopefully one day return to continue.

Try every new experience and take every oppertunity. Learn to laugh in what seems like an impossible situation, if not you will without a doubt go crazy! Relax , chill out , and try to take the madness in day by day.
Give Us Up To 10 Words That Sum Up Your Experience: For example - "A life changing experience!"
Unlikely that you will take home negative feelings, even if your experience wasn't all you thought it would be, it will by no means make you stronger.
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
Doing volunary work through a company ensures that you are looked after and cared for at all times. The place i stayed in gave us plenty of privacy and also time to sit with the family and talk at meal times. However being 25 years old and having lived independently for a number of years i found it extremely difficult to adapt to having a cerfew and getting in to trouble when i didn't return home one night. This gave me frequent flash backs of being 14 and living with Mum and Dad again! I understand ofcourse that this is for our own safety , however i did find it difficult to come to terms with and the experience would have been more enjoyable had i have had the freedom to which i am acustomed.

JAMES DIXON gives this project 7/10
Here is what JAMES had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
Being able to use all my skills in my placement position. I was welcomed and encouraged to lend my existing skills to the workplace in Ashraya Children's Home. I was placed within three different classes each day and this allowed me to remain enthusiastic and positive about my placement. Accommodation and work placement were close to each other and exploring and settling in Bangalore eas easy to manage.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
I was invited to lend my skills, as a man, in a female-dominated work environment in a country with different values and customs to my own. This I found frustrating to begin with but the relations between myself and my employers proved easy to build upon. I was told that the staff learned as much about a man's role in carework as maybe I learned about my preferred role in the workplace.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
Bangalore volunteers: 1: Allow yourself to be looked after by both your accommodation hosts and your in-country co-ordinators. Give them your respect and your time and it will be offered in return. 2: It's a little crazy to believe you're working so far from home. Bring as many things as you think will remind you of home and don't forget to keep in touch with any bit of news. 3: It's easy to jet-set around your host country but find some time to sit and be alone amongst all the new things you've found. Fellow volunteers can sweep you up in a whirlwind of social activity. Give an hour to yourself when you can.
Give Us Up To 10 Words That Sum Up Your Experience: For example - "A life changing experience!"
Strengthened my strengths and changed what was open to change.
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
The advice I gave future volunteers. More home comforts, some down-time and adapting quicker to host-country ways.

Alisha Daya gives this project 7/10

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
Being able to spend quality time with a few children in the class and increasing their confidence in english or maths, even over a short time, and seeing a result was very rewarding, and reinforces the fact that every child is capable they just need someone to take time for them.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
Be patient when working with children Try to do as many different things as possible and work with as many different ages to get a different experience
Give Us Up To 10 Words That Sum Up Your Experience: For example - "A life changing experience!"
I learnt the value of patience.
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
At the deaf school it would be good to have specific activities for volunteers to do while there so we arent just entertaining the kids, which doesnt feel as worthwhile and like we almost dont need to be there. If there were a few activities be it for learning or fun that the class relied on us for that would make me feel like my time is valued more, as opposed to just turning up and being there for myself, not for the children/community work.

Amy Mills gives this project 6/10
Here is what Amy had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
The children at the school for the Deaf were the sweetest I've ever met. They were loving and energetic and wanted to learn!

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
Some of the children had never seen a toilet before or seemed to have not bathed in a while. I had never seen children living such harsh lives.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
1.Women... Wear clothes that cover you or you will recieve even more stares than you already get. 2.If you go out at night, bring people and a rape alarm or a knife. 3.Drink lots of bottled water and try to eat bread whenever available.
Give Us Up To 10 Words That Sum Up Your Experience: For example - "A life changing experience!"
The children taught me more than I taught them.
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
A full warning of the dangers in the area and a few more cultural warm ups before being thrown into the society. No one warned me about the intensity of the men and how they really dont respect white women at all.

Jasmi Nasakkala gives this project 5/10
Here is what Jasmi had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
There were not many highlights, because the project was emotionally challenging or so my fellow volunteers and I came to think. The highlights would include the things I did outside my project, like getting to see some other places during weekends.

Was there a part of the project that changed the way you look at the world or affected you in some way?
I worked with animals that had been and still were treated badly by humans. The project made me become more aware of the negative impact of humans on animals and it caused me to loath the ignorance of humans towards helpless animals. Human beings are superior to animals and that power is easily manifested in doing evil to the animals. It's shocking to see that many people of the present time are completely unable to relate to the suffering of animals and don't do anything about it. More people are needed to protect the animals and their rights.
Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
1) It's good to take care of oneself in terms of getting enough sleep and following a healthy diet and going to seek medical care in case it's needed. 2) Knowing one's own motivation in the beginning of the project. If one lacks motivation, it's better to change the project rather than continue. Some enjoy the challenges proposed by the project and some don't. 3) Sticking to one's principles and knowing them clearly. Thinking clearly and using common sense all the time. People think differently in different parts of the world and it shouldn't shake the volunteers' way of thinking if it seems strange or inhumane to them.
Give Us Up To 10 Words That Sum Up Your Experience: For example - "A life changing experience!"
Pressurizing experience to see the world from the animals' perspective!
Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
More volunteers working together on the same project at the same time could have made more progress together.
